Care Instructions

Caring for Your Thistledown Pottery

Our handmade ceramics are crafted to be used and enjoyed every day. Our stoneware pottery is oven, microwave and freezer safe.  We recommend the following guidelines to ensure your pieces will last a lifetime:

Washing

Carefully handwashing your stoneware pottery will extend its life, however stoneware can also be cleaned in a dishwasher. Please be sure to load the dishwasher carefully so that pieces do not bump into each other and chip, and also use non-abrasive dishwasher detergent. If cleaning by hand stoneware should be brought to room temperature before cleaning to avoid thermal shock.

Using a dishwasher may dull the glaze over time.

Microwave

Most of our glazed pieces are microwave safe. However, avoid microwaving any pieces with metallic detailing and please be careful when handling hot ceramic items - it hurts!!

Oven

Stoneware pottery can be safely warmed or heated in the oven. Place your stoneware dish in the oven and allow it to heat gradually from cold when the oven is turned on. Stoneware is oven safe up to 220C. NEVER place stoneware pottery items in a preheated oven or heat on a hob, under a grill or an open fire. Rapid temperature changes will cause thermal shock which will cause your pottery to crack.

Freezer

Allow you stoneware piece to cool before placing it in the freezer to avoid thermal shock. Hot ceramics items should never be placed directly into the freezer.

Handling

Handmade ceramics can be more delicate than mass-produced pieces. Please handle with care and avoid knocking or dropping your pottery.

Stacking

If stacking pieces, place a soft cloth or felt pad between them to prevent scratching.

A Note on Handmade Pieces

Each piece is unique. Small variations in glaze, colour, and form are a natural and beautiful part of the handmade process — not defects.
